Question and Answer June14 large graphic“I wear soft contact lenses and don’t know which contact lens solution to buy. Do your doctors have any suggestions?” – Bob via email

A patient once pointed out that the eye care aisle at the drugstore is a confusing wall of multi-colored, little boxes. It is definitely challenging to know which solution offers the best all-day comfort. Our favorite contact lens solutions are the name-brand ones. That we are aware of, none of the name-brand formulas are sold to be manufactured as generic solutions, so your best bet is to stick with the real deal. For most patients, our doctors recommend a multi-purpose contact lens solution. Some of our favorite solutions are Alcon’s® Opti-Free Pure Moist® and Bausch and Lomb’s Biotrue™. Multi-purpose solutions are remarkable in that they clean, moisturize, and disinfect your lenses, all in a bio-compatible solution. For those patients that tend to form protein deposits on their lenses, a hydrogen peroxide solution may be more appropriate.  To determine which solution will work best for you and your eyes, please ask our eye doctors!

“I wear glasses and so does my husband. What are the odds of our kids having to wear glasses?” – Jennie via email

There really isn’t any good way to predict whether or not a child will need glasses, or at which age those glasses might be needed. Some parents that both wear glasses themselves have children that don’t need them until late in life, while other parents who have never needed glasses before have children with high refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism). Along with the American Optometric Association, our eye doctors recommend that all children be seen as infants for their first eye exam at 6-12 months of age, and in fact, Vista Eye Care is an InfantSEE provider. While the majority of very young children don’t need to wear glasses, those with a significant enough refractive error are at risk for developing amblyopia. Catching refractive error early can help reduce the risks of developing amblyopia an ensure that your children can see and learn!

“I had my eyes examined a few years ago and learned that the optometrists at Vista Eye Care recommend yearly exams. My eyes don’t seem to have changed in a while, why do you recommend I come in?” – Arturo via email

Our annual comprehensive eye and vision exam is designed to give you an overall picture of your eye health and to make sure that your vision is optimized for your job and hobbies. Our eye doctors will measure your refractive error, and examine the health of the front and back of your eyes. The eyes are unique in that they are the only place on the human body where living blood vessels (in the retina) can be viewed. Our optometrists will check for early eye disease such as cataracts or glaucoma, as well as to check your eyes for signs of diabetes, hypertension, or elevated cholesterol. The benefits of regular eye care are numerous, and we highly recommend yearly eye exams as part of your health care.
