Question and Answer June14 large graphic“I used to wear contacts, but they were too dry for my eyes. Are there any new that would be worth giving a shot?” –Sheryl via email

Contact lens technology continues to change and provide our eye doctors with great tools to correct vision. The latest and greatest lens is Bausch and Lomb’s® ULTRA™ soft contact lens. ULTRA™ utilizes new Bausch and Lomb research to offer patients the comfort of MoistureSeal Technology. These lenses are capable of retaining their moisture for 16 hours of lens wear. The lenses are remarkably thin, which translates to fantastic comfort. They are ideal for dry eye patients.  Vista Eye Care’s contact lens fitting includes trying out contacts for a week or two in order to make sure that you love your lenses.   After putting ULTRA™ to the test Sheryl, we think you’ll agree with so many of our other patients that these lenses make vision easy.

“Is it winter or spring already? My allergies are killing me! I use a variety of over-the-counter medications but can’t get any relief. Any advice?” –David via email

Eye allergies can be a constant battle with the local vegetation and climate. There are several over-the-counter anti-allergy medications that work well. Zaditor® by Alcon is a good over-the-counter anti-histamine that doesn’t have a vasoconstrictor component. A “vasoconstrictor” is a chemical that is added to some over-the-counter eye drops in order to make the eyes look white. However, over-using the vasoconstrictor may cause a rebound redness effect. Alaway® by Bausch and Lomb is another good over-the-counter option. For those patients with particularly bad allergies, there are several prescription eye medications that can help make sure your Spring is one without red, itchy, watery eyes!

“I was diagnosed with keratoconus several years ago and my last eye doctor tried to fit me in contact lenses. Those lenses never really worked well for me and I need to see better! Do you have any suggestions?” – Rob via email

Rob, it is quite common to learn that keratoconus patients have a history of trouble with their contact lenses. Keratoconus patients, by the very nature of their tricky corneas, are a challenging bunch to fit in contact lenses. However, contact lenses often provide the best vision correction for this patient population. Dr. Brian Abert, O.D., FAAO is a founding doctor of Vista Eye Care and works with a variety of contact lens designs to manage keratoconus. An excellent option for keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and post-surgical cornea patients is a scleral lens. The scleral lens is large, though once in the eye it sits very comfortably, affording great vision and comfort to its wearers. The best place to start with any keratoconus fitting is to come in to speak with Dr. Abert. After learning about how you use your eyes at work and for fun, you can arrive at a contact lens design that will meet your needs.
